In Guido We Trust
Smeargate was noteworthy not for the dismissal of Damian McBride, whose best days at Number Ten were already behind him, nor for the resignation from Labour List of the luminary Derek Draper, confirmed today, but for the continued rise to public prominence of a blogger that has been a fixture of the political blogosphere since time immemorial, Guido Fawkes.
Whilst Guido’s tone is somewhat more strident and less considered than that employed by Iain Dale, the other most read political blog, I will not hear a bad word said about him. His contribution - perhaps facilitated by being neither a sitting nor aspiring politician - in shining a spotlight on a political class replete with swindlers and cheats, where an obsession with the letter of the rules that govern conduct obscures any consideration of the spirit of those rules, is invaluable.
Another pitiful turnout at the local and European elections next month will help continue to vindicate Guido, fighting the good fight for an electorate disillusioned by the relentlessly disgraceful, immoral, inexcusable behaviour of some of our representatives. Jacqui Smith, in particular, take a bow.
