Twit Apps for Pol Geeks
No matter how much media coverage it continues to garner, as a social networking tool Twitter remains pretty niche. This was evidenced by the recent fire in Dean Street which was trended within minutes; only in Soho is there a high enough concentration of iPhones to ensure thorough coverage of an office fire. Luckily for us, politicians, journalists and general hacks have taken to tweeting like ducks to water. Well some have, others continue on a learning curve.
Perhaps I’ll blog another time about how useful Twitter is for PR and Public Affairs practitioners (perhaps not, it sounds like the sort of thing you could charge for), but for now I just wanted to show you some of the cool and in no way geeky tools there are for people interested in political tweeting.
First up is House of Twits, an aggregator which Re-tweets selected missives from politicians and political bloggers. Its feed reads like a thermometer for the Westminster crowd, and is a good way to find new people to follow:
But the folks at Tweetminster have gone a step further in the aggregation stakes, teaming up with the Independent to create a political Twitter app –The Tweetminster Wire. A downloadable dashboard that you can add to your desktop or connect to via Twitter, the wire is to House of Twits what Gordon Brown is to Barack Obama. Separating tweeters into PPCs, MPs and general political twitterati, it also provides you with analytics by party.
A screen grab would be pointless; you need to see this for yourself. I’m going to find a cloth to wipe the dribble off my keyboard.
